International tourism up by 5% in the first half of the year
International tourist arrivals grew by 4.6% in the first half of 2014 according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Destinations worldwide received some 517 million international tourists between January and June 2014, 22 million more than in the same period of 2013.

UNWTO Awards 2014 – Open for Applications
UNWTO has opened the call for applications for the 11th edition of the UNWTO Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism. Interested candidates can apply until the 31 October 2014. The Award Ceremony will be held during the Madrid International Tourism Trade Fair FITUR in Spain on 28 January 2015.

International tourism: strong peak season anticipated
Demand for international tourism remained strong in the first four months of 2014 according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. International tourist arrivals worldwide grew by 5%, the same rate as during the full year 2013. Prospects for the current peak tourism season remain very positive with over 460 million tourists expected to travel abroad in the May-August 2014 period.

UNWTO and France debate areas of further cooperation
UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, and the French Minister of State in charge of Tourism, Fleur Pellerin, met to discuss the new tourism strategy of France as well as how to further strengthen the collaboration with UNWTO. Issues on the agenda included visa facilitation, taxation and the World Committee on Tourism Ethics (Paris, 30 June 2014).

World Tourism Day 2014: Celebrating tourism and community development
‘Tourism and Community Development’ is the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day (WTD). The theme underscores the potential of tourism to promote opportunities for communities around the world, as well as the role that community engagement has in advancing sustainable tourism development. The official celebrations will be hosted by Mexico in the city of Guadalajara (27 September 2014).

UNWTO Executive Council: Tourism routes key to regional integration and development
The 98th session of the UNWTO Executive Council meeting in Spain highlighted the role of tourism routes in promoting regional integration and development. The Council further debated key factors to stimulate tourism growth such as visa facilitation and air connectivity while recalling the role the tourism sector can play in the sustainable development agenda (Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 5-6 June 2014).

Bulgarian Government receives Open Letter on Travel and Tourism
On behalf of the government of the Republic of Bulgaria, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Development Daniela Bobeva has accepted the UNWTO/WTTC Open Letter on Travel and Tourism, recognizing the socio-economic significance of tourism in Bulgaria and committing to support the mainstreaming of the sector in both the national and international agenda (Sofia, Bulgaria, 29 May 2014).

UNWTO and World Vision join forces to fight child exploitation in tourism
As tourism continues to grow globally, particularly in South East Asia, it is becoming increasingly urgent to consider its impact on local communities, particular where this relates to child exploitation. This is why UNWTO and World Vision East Asia Regional Office have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, forging a partnership aimed at fighting the exploitation of children in the tourism sector (17 April 2014).
